This Company Is Making American Nickel Great Again
A company called Homeland Nickel (TSX-V:SHL, OTC: SRGCF) has quietly assembled hundreds of millions of pounds of near-surface nickel deposits in Oregon
Homeland Nickel (TSX-V:SHL, OTC:SRGCF) is a Canadian-based mineral exploration company focused on critical metal resources with nickel projects in Oregon, United States and copper and gold projects in Newfoundland, Canada.
The United States is not known for nickel mining. In fact, the US only has one primary nickel mine in operation currently, and that mine (Eagle Mine in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan) is expected to exhaust its ore within the next five years.
However, it wasn’t always this way.
Between 1950 and 1987, the Hanna Nickel Mine (also known as the Riddle Nickel Mine) in Riddle, Oregon was one of the most prominent nickel mining operations globally. The Nickel Mountain ore deposit at Hanna was a lateritic concentration of garnierite, a complex nickel-magnesium silicate. This deposit developed from the Tertiary weathering of Jurassic peridotite, dunite, and serpentine. Mineralization occurs as finely divided veinlets in a chalcedony boxwork covering approximately 3,000 by 6,000 feet, averaging 60 feet deep. The average nickel grade was between 1.2 percent and 1.5 percent.
Since Hanna shuttered in the late 1980s, the US hasn’t had much nickel mining activity. However, the state of Oregon is still host to an enormous endowment of near surface nickel laterite deposits. In 2023, Homeland Nickel acquired several of the largest nickel laterite deposits in Oregon located within 100 km of the Hanna Nickel Mine and within the same geological sequence known as the Josephine Ophiolite.
I had the opportunity to speak with Homeland Nickel CEO Steve Balch to discuss his company’s nickel projects, and the plans for 2025.
